This is the story of Bradley. Now, Bradley was the meanest, toughest kid you'd typically find on the block and had a nasty reputation known throughout both his neighborhood and his school. He'd pickpocket, jump, threaten and humiliate unsuspecting kids, and would challenge and disrespect figures of authority and adults. Bradley was only 15, but he already had a very impressive resume on his hands. 8 robberies, 10 counts of vandelism, 6 counts obstructing the peace, and 39 counts of aggravated assault, and 3 accounts of sexual assault. Bradley had been to the juvenile deliquents centre at least a good 3 times a year, and had been kicked out of libraries, restaurants and even his school for disrupting the peace. He had an extremely heinous attitude, and loved to be reckless ( thank god he can't drive yet, says his mother). Bradley had no friends, because the ones who wanted to be his friends had frequent arguments with him, usually ending up in physical fights, and he had no girlfriend because he felt that he was superior to girls, and usually forced girls to love him when they didn't ( did i mention 3 counts of sexual assault?) Once, Bradley was in line at a Subway restaurant, and he just couldn't be patient. He would taunt the people at the front of the line, and would cuss and shout at them in disapproval. Finally, the manager came, and asked Bradley to be patient. Well, at that moment, i guess bradley really saw the red. He punched the manager, and gave him the nicest beating you could possibly imagine. Just picture the shocked and petrified customers and people in the eatery! They all looked at bradley. " NO ONE MESSES WIT ME AND GETS IN MY FACE LIKE DAT! ANY! WHO DOES THAT IS GONNA GET SMASHED!" He was panting, and breathing very heavily.
Bradley left that eatery, and was heading home. " What a stupid, lousy day." He thought to himself. but apart from being angry, he was proud because he had beaten down a person twice his age, and planned to brag about it the next day at school.
Bradley got home, and his mood.... kinda changed. He looked quite calm, had a look of desperation on his eyes, and was actually..... scared. He took of his shoes, and went upstairs to his room, and jumped onto his bed. The phone rang, and he answered. It was his " girlfriend," Janette. " Everything alright brad? I heard about what happened.." " Yeah, don't sweat about it." And with that, he smashed down the phone, and laid on the bed, whimpering, and curled up in fear. Something had transformed inside of him, and took him by the collar. It was although he had met death and fear straight in the eye. The door unlocked, and in came this cynical, diabolical and frightening looking man. He had tattoos all over him, had piercings, was very muscular, had earrings on his ears, nose and mouth, and was wearing a bandana and jeans, and was carrying a chain on his hand. " BOY! WHERE YOU AT! GODDAMIT GET DOWN HERE AND TELL ME WHERE U BEEN! IF YOU AIN"T HERE, I'M GONNA WALLOP YOU!!!!!" And he whipped his chain, cracking the wall. For he was...... Bradley's abusive father.... a bully.

Respect: earned, or given?
You know how when you enter a new semester, grade or school, you have those first day ceremonies where the principal of the school introduces him or herself, and goes on about how " everyone should show respect and gratitude towards others?" Well, if that be the case, why do we do the opposite and treat others with malice, and insult them and speak of them horribly behind their backs? If respect is truly given, why do I always see people being ignorant and ribald towards others? Based on my own personal experiences in school and society, I believe that respect has to be truly earned. I had to show that I was a fluent English speaker, who was well-talented and educated in certain areas of knowledge, and was a fun person overall. If I was not committed into being myself and showing my true potential as a person, I would've ended up as a true outcast around my own friends and omnipresent peers. Whenever I meet a new person, I tend to be very humble and courteous, and I never usually insult them or mistreat them at all, but whenever certain new people greet me, they think of me as a subordinate being, who's main goal is to provide them with some sort of social servitude or something. Why is it human nature for us to respect others only when they have proven themselves to be worthy of respect? We have to see and hear what they are capable of first, before we befriend them, and we have to have minimal conflicts with them.
These are truly interesting thoughts. Another interesting thing I found was that people are typically more respectful around those of the same or similar race. I read the Joy Luck Club once ( i didn't like it cause it was quite stereotypical), and came across this one interesting quote, which stated, " when a chinese person meets another chinese stranger in a crowd of white people, they immediately treat each other like family." I thought that this quote was rubbish, but then I began to think, and realized how true it really was. When you're in school, you'd usually see most white, asian, black, and Middle easten kids hanging out with people of their race ( cliques), and that one occasional white, black, asian and middle eastern guy or girl within the group ( like me). Another thing which influences respect could be physical appearance. Buff dudes typically hang around other buff dudes. Same goes with nerds, fanatics and girls who fancy music, fashion and certain Television shows or mainstream artists. Other times, this may not be the case. When they meet people who have the same qualities, they may feel as if they're being challenged, and usually compete against them to prove their superiority and machismo ( in the case of the buff dudes, like kozzy). In all, respect is both given and earned. Which of it is more, it depends on the situation and ultimately, the person him/herself. peace

As you're reading this......
As you are reading, yours truly ( Yang Ning) writing, or should i reiterate, typing out this note, I want you to think about something, as food for thought. Think about the hundreds and thousands of illiterate people who inhabit and live in this world today due to factors social, economical and even environmental. Whether it be poverty, a lack of available resources, bad climates, or even the fact that the majority of people living in third world countries are not able to access free or available education and schools like we can, many people today still cannot read, write or speak in English or even their mother tongues. It's quite a shame to even know deep down inside that thousands of North Americans and people living in the higher caste societies are not spending quality time and showing gusto and deep enjoyment when reading books and other materials of a literary context. Many people living in these societies already have the utmost privileges of wealthiness- money, accessories, food, water, shelter, clothing, education, safety, media and entertainment, occupations. Wait, allow me to rephrase and add a bit of zest to that comment. MORE THAN ENOUGH money, food, water, shelter, clothing, education, safety, media and entertainment ON A DAILY BASIS. Given all these tools and opportunities at disposal and usage, many are abusing them, and are not spending enough quality time reflecting and thinking about what they are doing, watching, reading and listening to.
Today, many young teenagers are quite oblivious. They are so easily brainwashed by the media, but are quite unaware of it. I, myself have been brainwashed as well, and have seen the pecuniary consequences associated with it. I buy things for no valid reason, all for the sake of fitting in and feeling popular amongst the omnipresent hooligans we call, the North American teen. Back then, many teenagers were quite the same. They may have done the exact things we did, but given that they did not have such advancements in the fields of technology and the media, and given the fact that they spent more time outdoors, they were actually more competent than us. Instead of the internet, they may have chosen to watch the television, read books, watch movies, play games, and go out, ect. Not to say that they were more well-mannered than us, but they definitely had much more experience and much more originality. Back then, so many quality books were written. In fact, books and literary materials back then were quite valued, as was education. If we were to compare education from back then to the education of today, I'd say it'd be kind of even in terms of the quality of material. Back then, many doctrines were mandatorily taught, and people were forced to study and partake in the courses which were demanding. Today, we get to CHOOSE what we want to study, and many educational materials have been quite washed down in terms of difficulty, which discourages further thinking. So, as you're reading these thoughts, maybe instead of watching the television every day, and going out to the mall, and playing video games, you should sit down, pick up a classic book such as Great Expectations or The great gatsby or david copperfield, read it, understand what is being read, and in turn, you'll have a much enlightened imagination and a different perspective on life and society in general. You'll never realize how those books, some of which are nearly 200 years old, can relate to you in so many personal ways. Peace.

From stones, to steam machines, to cars, to spaceships, to stones again.
As we all know, technology has truly been a blessful thing to have at our usage and disposal. If it weren't for modern technology, there would be no medicine, food, high life expectancy, quality of living, entertainment, education, communication, media, and so on. Phones, ipods, gaming consoles, computers, the media, all these things contribute to so much in our lives, and leaves us with a satisfied feeling within. But, abuse technology, and you'd be abused yourselves. This example has been proven and shown time and time again for the past hundreds of years. Wars, accidents, threats and failures have happened, and when they do, we begin to question ourselves on the reliance of technology, and sometimes we become so easily manipulated and paranoid as a result ( remember Y2K?) The past 60 years have been quite eventful. War, in the minds of some, can be blessful because new weapons and vehicles such as the tank had been created, as well as certain medicinal advances, protocols, and nation independency. But, remember how we all promised ourselves to rid of war and violence years ago, and remember the fact that it is still ongoing today. War and racial/territorial tensions have increased so substantially, that technology has vamped up to it's optimum levels, and has advanced more than ever before. Certain equipment has been created for the purpose of spying and anti spying, as well as bombing and preventing bombings. Newer weapons and chemicals such as anthrax have been discovered, and once eradicated diseases are now occuring due to the after effects of war, poverty and violence ( all these things are intertwined). But, I fear that there will be one day where technology will reach its peak, and where people will be in such fear, that they'll want to go back to using sticks and stones as their primary weapons and methods for survival again.
And so, unless people decide to cease fighting, powerful weapons and forms of technology may never cease to stop in production. There are also cons in the providence of good technology such as medicine and media. What if medicine and media advances so fast, that people forget the primary ways to obtain medicine and cure illnesses or mend wounds? What if the media begins to have such a detrimental impact on the standards of living, that it manipulates how people live, dress and eat in a way where it completely blemishes their overall uniqueness ( designer babies). So in a way, technology is a good thing to have, but one must remember to not abuse it, and to not be greedy otherwise there may be unwanted consequences to be dealt with in the end. Peace.

Imperfection
Have you ever had those weird days, where everything just doesn't seem alright? Where whatever you say or do seems to be either silly or wrong in the views of others and yourself? These are the days where frustration is at its most optimum level, and where despair and anger kicks in and the feelings of guilt, sadness and decrepidness surround your mind and you just cannot seem to shake em off. These days come almost once, twice or three times a month. And if they don't happen monthly or yearly, they're bound to appear somewhere in your life. The most frightening thing about this day is the fact that you don't know that it's here or coming- these days will hit you even when you're at your strongest, happiest and most self-accepting state of your life. No matter how big you are, how smart you are, how smart, good looking and popular you are, how gifted, ugly, stupid, tall, short, fat, skinny, ect. you are, one thing is certain and agreeable amongst people with all these characteristics: those days suck. Sometimes, it'll seem as though they'll never end, like an everlasting nightmare, you beg for the days to stop, and plead to God that it's all a dream and when you go to bed, you pray that things'll be much better and smoother the next occuring day. For others, the event seems to be very rare, as they may not experience such ambient loneliness and may regard those days as just " bad days." So therefore, they may be much more optimistic in nature, and may look at the positives of things: " at least we live in Canada, where second chances are typically given on a constant basis, and where good can be found in ugly, and where opportunities of change and salvation are at almost every corner- given that the people care for salvation, change and given that they WANT to help others get throught their most immense difficulties and stress."
No one on this planet can possibly be 100% perfect. Not everyone can be perfect at sports, music, academics, popularity, diversity, socialization, ect. And not everyone can be the biggest, the strongest, the fastest and the most dangerous or funniest/the most skilled, and not everyone can be the happiest, the most respectful, the most courageous, responsible, and even the people who are deemed the strongest and smartest may fall short on their bad days. And when they do, people will see them as being show-offs, fakes, losers and overrated in their strongest aspects and characteristics. Pianists can screw up in competitions, and singers/painters may be off on a key or on detail. Writers may run out of ideas, and boxers may get knocked out clean. Whatever the situation is, it doesn't matter. As mentioned before, sometimes, these things continue to happen, and sometimes they abruptly occur, out of the blue and for many, it seems as if the world is over and they go ballistic, start blaming themselves, and complain and groan about how they "could've" or "should've" done or prevented something. Some go so far, they either retire, quit or harm themselves and others to ease up their nerves.
Many of us have been through the above experiences. I have definitely gone through many of the experiences listed, and have complained and moaned about the issue so much, that I would just practically give up. It wasn't until I stumbled upon the reality of it all: that no one in the world is 100% perfect, and the reality that there are hundreds and millions out there who have the same days and feelings that I do, if not worse. So in conclusion, humans cannot possibly reach perfection 100% of the time. They all make mistakes and all gain and lose one way or another. If things were to be too perfect, there would be no need to improve, practice or enhance skills or things which we possess today, and there would be no point of learning. In fact, if everyone were to be perfect and capable of doing everything at the most optimum level, there would be no point in hosting competitions, as there would be no winner or uniqueness. Be unique in your own way.

Only the rich.....
This is the story of Alfred, an everyday man who lived in the urbanized city of New York. Alfred was a very fortunate individual because he had been born into a very wealthy family. His father was a medical doctor, who studied and passed with honours at Harvard and his mother worked as an actress, acting in broadway and her image was frequently seen on massive billboards throughout the city. When Alfred was a small child, his father had told him to " earn" his living, and to " work" for what he wanted to inevitably become. He had great faith in his son, and believed that his son would surpass him in terms of success and prosperity. His mother had a siimilar view, and reminded Alfred that no matter what he would become, that he should maintain a strong sense of character and individualism within. As Alfred started school, they reminded him the importance of respect, courteous and work ethic as well as the notion of having fun and enjoying what he did. In a way, his parents had much faith and guided him throughout his life. One day, when Alfred and his family were attending his mother's performance at the Broadway theatre, a ragged homeless man approached them. " Please, if you chaps could kindly spare some money, I've been here for ages, and have little to feed myself with." At the grotesque sight of this ragged, dirty and foul looking man, the family shuddered, and quickly paced themselves towards the theatre. " Who was that man, daddy?" Alfred said with a look of confusion on his face. " Oh, that was one of the actors. He was just practicing for the play, which is going to start in a while. Come on now Alfred, let us make haste." And with that, they entered the broadway theatre. Now, this old and ragged man still continued to beg and plead for money, yet he was immensely ignored and disgraced by the hundreds of New Yorkers who walked by.
During that day, not one person paid attention to that old fellow, and he was forced to leave the streets by the Brooklyn police due to him being a " public nuisance." A few days had passed, and Alfred was on his way to school when, yet again, he encountered that same old man. " Please young one, you must understand that the winters are approaching and i have little to feed myself with. I understand and know how i look, but i beg of you to just spare me some..." but before he could finish, Alfred's father came running and shouting " STAY AWAY FROM MY SON YOU CREEP!" And with that, the old man ran away, frightened... and hungrier than ever. 10 years passed, and within, Alfred had never encountered that old man. He was a Christian now, and was quite devoted in his church. " I believe that i have found the right path to success through God's bidding and his word." Alfred would regularly preach on Sundays, and many friends would be in awe of him. " what a respectful, kind and genuine person!" They'd say. Alfred's father had passed away, and his mother was ill but alfred himself had strong faith and he believed that his life was very successful. He had passed college, and had worked as a lawyer, and had the most desirable wife, who just happened to work as an actress. He had never expected to see that old man until one day, as he was walking to earth, he caught a glimpse of an old looking fellow walking down the street. He looked extremely malnourished, was very wrinkly, and had been beaten quite badly. Alfred became nervous, and hurriedly made his way to the stop light and when it had turned white, he calmy walked across, trying to ignore the man. When he reached the end, he heard some commotion behind him. " that old man is going to get hit! Someone help him across!" He turned around and saw the old man. He had collapsed, and was crawling, begging for someone to help him across. Alfred panicked, and looked to his side- a large truck was approaching! And the driver didn't seem to notice the old man at all! Alfred thought to himself, " all my years, i've failed to help those in need, and cared so much about my own success, that i've ignored others who couldn't afford a chance at success. How stupid have i been!!" And so, risking his own life, he ran onto the street and pushed the old man away, only to be blindsided by the truck......
A few days later, Alfred's wife and family visited the hospital he was at. His doctors had told alfred about the severity of the damage. " you may never walk, talk or move your torso again. You'll have to be fed intravenously, and you have to take these pills daily." At this point, the family members bowed their heads. " He was so young, and had a bright future ahead. How could this have happened."
And so the lesson: Money is helpful- it can help you get food, water, clothing and can guide you through life, but it is the value of life which should be nurtured and protected the most. And what you do with your properity and how you treat others has a strong influence on what your character will be, and how others will look at you. Make the right decisions and prepare for the worst. Don't shy away from helping others and talking to them because it may double cross you in the end........

If i was a violent man...
If i was a violent minded maniac, and was truly pissed at my most hated enemy, and had him where i wanted him, and knew that he just wouldn't escape, what would i do? Would i beat him with my bare fists and feet until he's covered in bruises, cuts, bleeds and cries and begs for mercy and until he sees that bright light or feels as if he's floating and light, or would i suffocate him until he begs for air, and turns purple like grapejuice, and red as an apple? Would I break every single bone in his body, and crunch every major limb and little bone bit by bit, his fingers, his toes, his nose, his ribs, break them into specs of dust and throw him around like a rag doll? Would I stab him until he becomes like a fishing net, full of holes and bleeds everywhere? Or would i be brutal and bludgeon him until he becomes as flat as a surfboard? What would i do to him physically if he did something to me which would make me lose my moral sanity? I've described the physical aspects because to almost every human being, it feels much more satisfying to obtain redemption physically rather than emotionally as you can truly see that person suffer. If a person makes you suffer, you have that first feeling of making them suffer more than you, just so that you can teach them a lesson. And once you do make them suffer, you have this feeling of regret and fear bestowed upon you because deep down inside, you know that they will get you back one way or another. If it's mano y mano, they'll get you back personally. If it's personal and blood related, they'll wage a vendetta on you and make you a sworn enemy for the rest of their lives, depending on the severity of damage.
But why fight fire with fire? Or why add gas to the flame when you could easily resolve disputes through discussions and agreements? Oh yeah, that's right, you just can't. Right now, war is present in places such as the middle east and Africa ( and parts of south america as well). These battles have been present for decades and despite promises, little has yet to be achieved. So, if you think my examples were insane, just wait until you realize the reality that yes, people do fight over dumb things such as religion and customs and that yes, thousands are being slaughtered on a daily basis due to race ( Tutsi) and yes, innocent civilians are being killed due to the fact that some people have stupid beliefs telling them that they should kill them. And the craziest thing of all? No one gives a damn, because no one cares or knows.
