Racism

This is possibly one of my most favourite topics to talk about solely based on the fact that many people out there misinterpret the meaning of it. It's so funny to me how the world views racism today: If your're a white person, you're racist, if you mock a person's accent, you're racist, if you are too proud of your own race, you're racist. And if you choose a person of the same race over other people of other races, you're looked at as a racist. if you even MENTION an ethnicity or culture, you're deemed a racist as suspicions may grow. The reality is, that everyone and anyone can be racist. It doesn't matter if you're chinese, white, black or middle eastern- no person of any race should have an exception when it comes to being racist. Racism can be physical and verbal. The most serious form of racism depends on the person, and how the person reacts. Some people are more offended when they are physically beaten and mistreated based on their race. Some may be offended by insults and slurs. Another thing about racism- everyone has been, or still is a racist ( yeah, even me). Most people will exhibit their racist selfs only around their friends, or when they're alone ( the Id and the superego states). A sense of urgency and desperation kicks in if a person were to act racist around a bunch of people they're offending or talking about. Racism, to me, is really funny and serious at the same time. Whenever a person insults a white, brown or asian person they feel quite comfortable. But, whenever a person offends a black person, even to the most MINIMAl amount, they feel a deep sense of urgency and danger ( especially when a black person IS around). When i look at the society today, many people think that it's ok to insult asians and white people or at least feel less endangered.

I blame this on the media. See, the media portrays white people and asian people to be a bit more subtle and well-mannered than black or middle eastern people ( this isn't always the case though, i have seen movies of the exact opposite scenario). There are stereotypical images the media portrays of each race: The asian is the weakest, smallest, and the geekiest and the one with no friends. The asian provides comic relief, and is usually only the hero in Martial arts flicks like Hero. The white person is perceived as the modern hero, the strongest, the boldest, and the one who always has a way out of things or gets the girl/lives in the end. Black characters are perceived as the strongest, toughest and coolest, although they are now being perceived as intelligent and are garnering much more appeal than ever before. The Middle easterns are seen as merchants, and in the case with American flicks, the "terrorists" ( its' funny to me cause middle easterns and i view americans as the ones being terrorists since they have been occupying iraq and afghanistan for decades. i never knew how only 1 bombing could label a country as being " terrorist bound" when americans bomb the middle east almost like every month). People who watch these movies and shows and these stereotypes then agree or at least view the person of another race based on that exhibited stereotype, and this is how racism begins.

I really don't see a day where racism will end. As long as every race exists, racism will never cease to be extinct from the face of the earth.
